Die Deutsche Wochenschau (German Weekly News) Nr. 644 - 6 January 1943

Die Deutsche Wochenschau is the title of the unified newsreel series released in the cinemas of Nazi Germany from June 1940 until the end of World War II, with the final edition issued on 22 March 1945. The co-ordinated newsreel production was set up as a vital instrument for the mass distribution of Nazi propaganda at war.

In this Die Deutsche Wochenschau video:

00:50 - Greeting from the homeland to the front, Salzburg, Austria, 1942.
The newsreel opens with scenes from Salzburg, described as a “greeting from the homeland to the front.” Panoramic view over the city shows the Hohensalzburg Fortress, Salzburg Cathedral and Mirabell Palace.

01:16 - Training at a NSFK Gliding School, German Reich, 1942.
Scenes shows glider training camps of the National Socialist Flying Corps (NSFK), where members of the Hitler Youth are prepared for future Luftwaffe service. Young trainees are depicted constructing models, studying aeronautics, and progressing to real glider flights. Solo takeoffs, winch launches, and landings are highlighted as milestones.

02:58 - North Africa/Tunis and Id al-Adha, Tunisia, 1942.
The scene shifts to Tunis, where the local population is shown celebrating the Islamic festival of Eid al-Adha despite wartime conditions. The Bey of Tunis receives foreign representatives, including German envoy Rudolf Rahn and Generaloberst Jürgen von Arnim. The narration stresses that festivities proceed “undisturbed under German protection,” portraying German occupation forces as stabilizing and respectful of local traditions—an image intended to legitimize Axis presence in North Africa.

04:26 - Leningrad Sector of the Eastern Front, Soviet Union, 1942.
A large portion of the newsreel focuses on trench warfare near Leningrad. Daily life in German positions is shown: reinforcing dugouts, clearing snowed-in trenches, dealing with thaw and frost cycles, and maintaining hygiene under harsh winter conditions. The film emphasizes endurance and adaptability. The encirclement of Leningrad is highlighted, with claims that German lines reach the city’s tram endpoints. Soviet resupply attempts are depicted as futile under German firepower.

07:24 - Encirclement Battles near Toropets/Central Front, Soviet Union, 1942.
The narrative intensifies with scenes from the central sector, particularly around Toropets. German ski troops, supply columns, and artillery logistics are shown, stressing the scale of operations. The newsreel portrays a successful German counteroffensive encircling Soviet forces in a “pocket.” Assault troops clearing bunkers with grenades and incendiary weapons. The narration claims heavy Soviet losses and failed breakout attempts, including the destruction of US-made tanks (M3 Lee).

12:27 - Armored assault southeast of Toropets, Soviet Union, 1942.
Tanks and Panzergrenadier units are shown advancing in harsh winter conditions, overcoming Soviet resistance. A quotation from Adolf Hitler’s New Year address is inserted, reinforcing ideological messaging about sacrifice and historical greatness. Artillery barrages (“drumfire”) and battlefield aftermath scenes underscore the narrative of overwhelming German strength. Reported Soviet losses are presented in detail, contrasting high casualties with relatively fewer prisoners to emphasize the “ferocity” of the fighting.

15:59 - Naval Warfare/Auxiliary Cruiser 'Atlantis', South Atlantic / Saint-Nazaire, France, 1941.
German U-boats are shown rescuing survivors of the auxiliary cruiser 'Atlantis', which had been sunk after a long raiding mission. Upon return to base, the crew is welcomed, and Commander Bernhard Rogge reports to Grand Admiral Erich Raeder. The 'Atlantis' is credited with sinking large amounts of Allied shipping during a 655-day voyage without entering port—presented as an extraordinary naval achievement. Recovered onboard footage depicts attacks on merchant ships, emphasizing German naval reach and disruption of Allied supply lines.
