An infantry company occupies prepared positions stretching along the entire coast. The coast is covered in smoke. Artificial fog is placed over moored battleship "Tirpitz" in a fjord. Close and long-range reconnaissance aircraft monitor the airspace up to the edge of the perpetual ice. The entire bay and fjord-rich coast is dotted with countless guns of all calibers heavy bunkers, and special weapons. Heavy and light units of German navy monitor the vast sea surrounding Norway.

08:30 - Finnish front, Karelia, Finland/Soviet Union, 1942.
Finnish soldiers transporting logs to build a wooden houses for the families of fallen comrades in need. A finishing general presents the title deeds to the new owners in the name of the troops.

10:24 - Leningrad area, northern sector of the Eastern Front, Soviet Union, 1942.
The island fortress of Kronstadt in the Bay of Leningrad is under heavy artillery fire. These photographs were taken at a distance of 15 km with a telephoto lens. The Soviet battleship "Marat" returns fire. German and Croatian fighter units are attacking the defenses of Leningrad. The port and industrial area of ​​Leningrad are under fire. 

13:34 - The Battle of Stalingrad, Soviet Union, 1942.

The Führer leaves the headquarters of Field Marshal von Bock on whose front sector the great battle of annihilation for Kharkov was fought. The Führer on the flight to Finland where he paid a visit to Marshal of Finland, Baron von Mannerheim on the occasion of his 75th birthday. Hitler's flight captain Hans Baur. Hitler in conversation with Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel. The Führer greets General Dietl and informs him of his promotion to Colonel General. The Führer honored the Marshal von Mannerheim with a special award by presenting him the Grand Cross of the Order of the German Eagle in Gold. 

09:03 - The Second Battle of Kharkov, Eastern Front, Soviet Union, 1942.

Battle between Erich von Manstein's German and Romanian 11th Army and the Soviet Crimean Front forces in the Kerch Peninsula, in the eastern part of the Crimean Peninsula. On 8 May 1942, the Axis attacked in a major counteroffensive codenamed "Trappenjagd" which concluded by around 19 May 1942 with the defeat of the Soviet defending forces. German infantry units crossing the Parpatsch anti-tank ditch. Column of German tanks (Panzer 38t, Panzer III Ausf. J) advance toward Kerch. Assault on the Tartarengraben. A spearheads of the attack are fighting their way into the city. Anti-aircraft artillery is firing on enemy transporters attempting to escape at the last moment. View on the industrial complex of Kerch. Report about over 170,000 Soviets are taken prisoner. Scenes show the battlefield of Kerch. The victors of Kerch flew the swastika flag.

02:20 - North Africa front, Tobruk/El Alamein, 1942.
German soldier near AA-gun emplacement observe the coastal area of Tobruk. Report about British attempt to land near Tobruk. The troops of the German-Italian coastal defenses crushed the enemy units before they could gain a foothold in the port area. The spearhead of our assault troops has already penetrated the suburbs and is firing flares. New German tank units drive past damaged Soviet AA-gun (85 mm M1939 (52-K)). A shock troop is gathering for a new assault. German troops cross railway embankment under enemy fire. Scenes show panorama of destroyed Stalingrad city and the Volga river in the background. German troops are fighting their way ever closer to the port area. The term "Stalingrad street gun yard" likely refers to the brutal urban warfare tactics employed during the Battle of Stalingrad, where buildings and streets were transformed into fortified positions. German troops assault through the rubble of buildings, fighting their way in brutal close-quaters combat. The Imperial War Flag is laid out as an identifying mark for Luftwaffe. Mountain infantry observe the terrain through binoculars on their defensive positions. A Soviet shock force attack German positions. Knight's Cross recipient Sergeant Johann Bauer on the observation post. The enemy attack collapses under concentric fire from the surrounding pass and summit positions. The surviving Bolsheviks are taken prisoner. In August 1942, the German Wehrmacht, specifically units from the 1st Mountain Division, occupied the area surrounding Mount Elbrus. A detachment of German mountain troops, led by Captain Heinz Groth, reached the summit and planted the Nazi flag. When Hitler learned of the summiting of Elbrus, he reportedly considered it a "stunt" and threatened to court-martial the general who ordered the feat.

Anti-aircraft artillery (Flak 8.8 cm) fighting against Bolshevik tanks which are advancing in heavy formations. Stukas and fighter planes pounce on the enemy with devastating force. Heavy artillery hammers the enemy divisions South of Lake Ladoga. A briefing at a Panzer battalion.  Tanks and assault guns drive ever new wedges into the enemy. Scene show Panzer II Ausf. J advancing. The infantry clears out the individual pockets of resistance. Enemy low-flying aircraft attack Germans.
17:51 - Southeast of Lake Ilmen, Soviet Union, 1942.
An artillery observation balloon is released. Army and Waffen SS forces attack the Soviets in the Lake Ilmen area. Waffen SS soldiers in trenches shortly before the assault. Waves of German troops break through Soviet defensive lines. The Bolsheviks surrender themselves in small groups. 
22:02 - Luftwaffe operations, Soviet Union, 1942.
A squadron of He-111 fighter aircraft taking off to attack Bolshevik supply lines and reserves far behind the enemy front. Soviet transport trains are bombed. High-explosive and incendiary bombs are dropped on an important transportation hub, fuel depot, supply roads and armaments factory.

An investigation party crosses over and determines the cargo which consisted of military equipment and ammunition. The freighter breaks apart after ammunition detonation.

Oberleutnant Diekmann of Afrikakorps

Both the sun and washing worked to bleach out the colours of the clothes. The young officer in this picture, dated 3 May 1942, was Oberleutnant Diekmann, aide to General Erwin Rommel of Afrikakorps. The picture was taken by Kriegsberichter Ernst Alexander Zwilling.

German Soldiers Enjoying Music through Gramophone

Similar to the scene in the movie "Saving Private Ryan", this photo - which was taken by Kriegsberichter Geller from PK (Propaganda-Kompanie) 694 - shows German soldiers from the panzer and infantry units enjoying the music from a gramophone, amidst the ruins of war-damaged buildings on the Eastern Front. There is no exact information which unit they came from, but most likely they were part of 1. Panzerarmee / Heeresgruppe A whom are celebrating the fall of Rostov to the Germans on July 23, 1942. Obviously this photo was not taken in Stalingrad as some sources claim. - including Bundesarchiv - because in July the German troops had not yet arrived in the "City of Hell".

Regimentskommandeur Emmanuel von Kiliani in the Winter

Oberst Emmanuel von Kiliani (Kommandeur Artillerie-Regiment 193 / 93.Infanterie-Division) in Gostilizzy, winter of 1941/42. Starting from 8 September 1941, the regiment set up its command post in a manor in Gostilizzy, Leningrad Oblast, Russian Front. Kiliani would receive the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold on 2 January 1942 as a Regimentskommandeur in the same position.

Marriage by proxy is one more than a hundred-year-old family law institution, common to the legal systems of many states. Obviously it consists of a marriage in which one of the spouses, who is absent, is replaced by a third party for the issuance of consent; This third party acts as a proxy through a special power that has been legally granted by the absent spouse.

A Law of November 4, 1939 regulated this institution for the Wehrmacht members in campaign. The family book and an affidavit on the Aryan ancestry of the bride and the corresponding civil registry data were required. Over time, a mere written statement was enough.

The ceremony for the bride took place in the office of the civil registry with the presence of two witnesses and was called “Stahlhelmtrauung” or “steel helmet wedding”, since a steel helmet was placed to symbolize the presence of the absent contractor.

The ceremony for the groom took place before an officer of his unit and in the presence of comrades of the contracting party, who acted as witnesses.

S-Minen Preparation by Afrikakorps

 

S-Minen preparation with a vast array of fuzes (pressure and trip). Mines are for defending but also for slowing down the enemy. Booby traps not forgotten. The picture was taken when the Axis troops were in full retreat in Lybia, December 1942.

Zentral Ersatzteillager 220 Photo Album

These photos comes from the private collection of Denis Daum, and shows the visit of Generaloberst Erwin Rommel (Oberbefehlshaber Panzerarmee "Africa") to the Zentral Ersatzteillager 220 headquarters in Benghazi, Libya, which took place on May 19, 1942. Officer with the bright hemd and shorts that accompanied him is Major Peter Deiglmayer, who was the commander of the central warehouse supplying the Afrikakorps vehicle parts. Coming with Rommel on his visit was his loyal Chief of Staff, Generalmajor Alfred Gause, who could be recognized from the Ritterkreuz medal on his neck.
