Pilots of I./JG 26 with Their New Leather Outfit

 

A picture which showing the heavy losses of fighter units in the "Reichverteidigung" (Defence of the Reich). Taken early October 1944, it shows pilots of I.Gruppe / Jagdgeschwader 26 (JG 26) with their new leather outfits in front of the Kommandantur of Krefeld airfield. Of these twelve men only four would survive the war, the other eight would be killed in the eight months until the end of the war. In the first row from left to right: Feldwebel Freiberger (1. Staffel, wounded as Oberfeldwebel on 10 December 1944 in combat with P-47 near Holzhausen / Neuß, died of his wounds on 2 April 1945); Unteroffizier Emil Brühan (1. Staffel, wounded on 25 February 1945 during a belly landing 2 km north-east Ladbergen because of engine failure; died of his wounds on 2 March 1945); Unteroffizier Heinrich Herbster (3. Staffel, wounded on 31 March 1945 by Flak near Lüdinghausen, bailed out and survived); Oberfähnrich Wolfgang Franz (3. Staffel, killed on 26 March 1945 in combat with Tempest near Lengerich); Unteroffizier Wilhelm Düsing (2. Fremde Heere Ost (Foreign Armies East) itself is an intelligence organization formed by the German Army whose task is to analyze foreign military forces on the Eastern Front, especially the Soviet Union. When World War II ended, Abteilungschef Gehlen and his men were used by the CIA to continue their work in spying on Soviet Communists through a "new but old" unit called the Gehlen Organization. This unit later became the forerunner of the Bundesnachrichtendienst, a West German intelligence unit in the Cold War era.

At the inauguration ceremony of the Landesgruppe, held at Luftschutzschule (Air raid school) in Bad Godesberg, Nordrhein-Westfalen. From left to right: Generalmajor Walther Wecke (Kommandeur Reichsluftschutz-Schule in Berlin-Wannsee), Oberst der Schutzpolizei Georg Jedicke (Inspekteur Ordnungspolizei der Rheinprovinz und des Saarlandes), Generalleutnant Ludwig von Schröder (Vizepräsident Reichsluftschutzbund), Generalleutnant Johannes Lentzsch (Kommandierender General Luftgau-Kommando I Königsberg), and Generalleutnant Karl von Roques (Präsident Reichsluftschutzbund). 8 December 8th 1944: Co-signer of the appeal 'To the people and the Wehrmacht' of the Bundes Deutscher Offiziere (BDO, Federation of German Officers) in the National Committee "Freies Deutschland" (NKFD, Free Germany). It was a German anti-Nazi organization that operated in the Soviet Union during World War II, with members mostly came from German officers and generals in captivity. Young Platoon Commanders from Pionier-Bataillon 25

Four young Zugführer (Platoon Commanders) from Pionier-Bataillon 25, pictured in the summer of 1942. From left to right: Leutnant Emil Gräf (1. Kompanie), Leutnant Anton Locherer (2. Kompanie), Leutnant Fritz Molfenter (2. Kompanie), and Leutnant Karl Vögele (2. Kompanie). The battalion was an excellent blend of experience and youth. Most of the officers had been soldiers or NCOs in the battalion during the Polish or French campaigns: the battalion was one of the fortunate few where men would spend their entire careers. If they were wounded, retrained or promoted, chances were very good that they would return to their beloved Pionier-Bataillon 45.

SS-Verfügungstruppe on Winter Exercise

A group of motorised troops from the SS-VT (SS-Verfügungstruppe) on winter exercises. Most wear the standard Greatcoat - or "Mantel" - though some, such as the two at extreme right, wear the motorcyclist rubberised waterproof coat. Note the use of the SS-VT pattern field cap with metal deathshead button at front and small machine embroidered eagle on the side.
